We’re back from Mexico two months now and I’m only just getting a chance to type up a review as life has just been a bit crazy since we got back! I’ve posted loads of pics on my Instagram feed and stories if you want to take a look..
How do I even begin to describe this holiday?! It was just like living in a dream land for a week – I can see how it’s so popular for weddings and honeymoons!
We organised our trip with TUI from London Gatwick direct to Cancun airport and flights, accommodation and transfers were included in this. We booked through First Choice in the UK. Just note you need a UK address to book so we just used a friend’s address. They do really good deals on different resorts around the world – its definitely worth checking out! We just organised our own cheap flights to and from London Gatwick then, as we’re based in Dublin.
The only problem with TUI was that the seats felt quite cramped with not much leg room. If you can afford to spend a little extra on the legroom seats up the front it would be WELL worth it. It’s about a 9h45m flight from Gatwick.
We touched down in Cancun at about 3pm (Mexico time). As we came into the arrivals hall a man asked us if we were with TUI, we said Sí (yes in Spanish) and he took our cases for us to the bus. When we got to the TUI organised bus he asked for a tip and we apologised as we had no money at all, only our debit cards. We soon realised that most of the staff in Mexico receive very little wages and expect tips – and with the service they provide we had absolutely no problem forking out a few pesos to all of the lovely staff who served us. The service was honestly out of this world. They were all so polite and couldn’t do enough for us. I would definitely recommend having pesos or US dollars with you when you land so that you are more prepared for tipping than we were!
As soon as we arrived outside our hotel we knew it was something special. From the outside it looked so modern and new. There was a concierge at a desk outside the hotel waiting to greet us and take our cases. We then walked into the lobby to check in and were greeted with a glass of some sort of kiwi bubbly drink in a champagne glass! At check in all the ladies were given a flower from reception too which I thought was such a sweet touch!
We had an ocean view room, which meant we had the most beautiful view of both sunrise and sunset. I would definitely recommend paying extra for this! Our room was just incredible – marble floors, double sinks with mirrors, an indoor hot tub, free mini bar with full bottles of spirits, balcony looking out across the ocean. It was so luxurious 😍
One of the best parts of staying at this resort is that we were literally on the beach. When we were in the pool we were looking out on to the beach and the sea. This is where we spent most of our time!
We literally had everything we wanted on our door step! There was a swim-up bar in the pool which served a huge range of cocktails and different smoothies and drinks.
A waiter would come around and take our order when we were at our sun beds or even at the edge of the pool. We tipped him every day and he would look after us for the whole day then. There was a great snack bar at the pool too where we ate buffalo wings, nachos, steak tacos and the food was seriously good!
The food was probably the best part of this trip! Because we had booked All-Inclusive we could eat and drink whatever we wanted in the resort with our wristbands (we got these at check-in). There were four different restaurants in the resort – Buffet, Italian, Steak restaurant and Thai restaurant. Room Service was also available 24/7. Breakfast was definitely my favourite meal of the day though! I’m pretty sure you have never experienced a buffet like this! They had EVERYTHING!!
Mimosas, five types of fruit juices, yoghurt and granola pots, homemade smoothies, pancake and waffle bar, omelette bar, so many pastries and breads (croissants, bagels, cakes), huge selection of fresh fruit, cereals, fresh guacamole, salsas, hot foods like pulled pork, chicken tinga, refried beans, crispy bacon. I could go on and on and on! Even if you aren’t a breakfast person this would be a dream come true. They also cater for allergies too 👍
I’ve already discussed the snack bar at the pool for lunch so let’s move on to dinner time! 🍴 The first night we went to the Steak restaurant which is outdoors on the patio. There’s a massive buffet and then you pick which meat you like. I got butterfly chicken and Gav got steak New York style. There were so many salads and it was here I discovered that Caesar salad with crispy bacon is really popular in the All-Inclusives in Cancun so I was in my element. We also got a bottle of white wine which was included too. I was too hungry to take a pic 🙊
Another night we discovered there was a Michael Jackson show on so we decided to go to the Italian restaurant beforehand seeing as we would be making a bit of an effort anyway! La Tratto is probably the strictest dress code of the four, Smart Casual (basically no flip flops and shorts).
The food was absolutely delicious but the portions were smaller than we thought they would be. I’m sure this had something to do with the fact we’d been loading the food on to our plates at the buffets!! I had the Caesar salad starter and Gav had beef carpaccio.
It was just a different level of tastiness! For mains I had the lasagne and Gav had the lamb rack.
They were so delicious but then we saw these round bread rolls with a lid (also made of bread) being served to other peoples’ tables. We found out it was a parmesan soup so we got one of those to share too! I highly recommend it!
The Thai restaurant was really nice. The waitresses were dressed in traditional Asian kimonos which was a lovely touch. The food was so tasty – the same quality as what you would get in a really good Thai restaurant in Dublin. I definitely recommend the spring rolls. I’d recommend going here after 8pm as the pool is closed so it’s less noisy and a bit more romantico!
Another amazing aspect of staying at Sun Palace was that we could go to either of the sister resorts, Beach Palace or Moon Palace and still use our All- Inclusive wristbands.
We went to Beach Palace for a few drinks one of the nights. They had a great sports bar with a DJ and a rooftop terrace.
Moon Palace on the other hand was just out of this world!! This 5-star resort has three different hotels within it – The Grand, Nizuc and Sunrise.
We went to Los Caporales restaurant in Nizuc where they make fresh guacamole at your table. Highly recommend this place!
I couldn’t recommend Sun Palace enough if you are looking for a romantic getaway and to relax with peace and quiet. If you’re looking for a bit more of an exciting holiday to party or going on holidays as a family Moon Palace is the perfect place. It has a lot of activities on during the day for all ages and has its own nightclub.
What a holiday! Stay tuned for a review on the tours we did, especially our visit to Chichen Itza!
